Installing a 12V Fridge

1. What a 12V Fridge Needs Electrically

⚡ Stable 12–14V supply

12V fridges are very sensitive to voltage drop. They typically require:

  • 10.4–11.8V minimum under load, depending on the brand

  • If voltage drops too low, they stop working or show error codes

🔋 Reliable power delivery

Typical consumption:

  • Start-up surge: 5–10A for a split second

  • Running draw: 3–5A

  • Daily consumption: 25–60Ah depending on ambient temp

📏 Correct cable gauge

Most manufacturers recommend 6 mm² cable as the minimum — regardless of run length.
Longer runs may require 10 mm², but please be aware that if using anything over 6mm cable, you may struggle to find spade connectors to fit your cable. Try to keep cable runs as short as possibly to minimise this risk.

Also, please remove the short test cables  (usually around 2.5mm2 gauge and less than a metre long) and connect your 6mm cable directly to the spade connectors on the rear of your fridge.

3. Fuse Size & Placement

🔒 Required Fuse Rating

  • Most fridges: 15 A or 20 A fuse

  • Check the fridge label; if unsure → use 15 A

📍 Fuse Location

  • Within 15–20 cm of the battery or distribution block

  • BEFORE the cable enters any trunking or conduit


4. Wiring Route (Best Practice)

Positive (Red)

Battery → 15/20 A Fuse → 6 mm² Cable → Fridge positive terminal

Negative (Black)

Fridge → 6 mm² Cable → Battery negative or chassis earth

Always use:

  • Heat-shrink crimp terminals

  • Proper ferrules if connecting to a fridge terminal block

  • Tinned cable if available

 

5. Do NOT Power Your Fridge From…

❌ Cigarette lighter sockets
❌ 1.5–2.5 mm² cable
❌ Shared grounds with pumps or heaters
❌ The same circuit as USB sockets
❌ Cheap unfused distribution boxes

Fridges demand clean, stable power — treat them as a dedicated device.

7. Ventilation & Mounting Considerations

Even though this is wiring, airflow affects electrical performance:

  • Ensure warm air from the compressor can escape

  • Leave 20–30 mm behind fridge if recessed

  • Don’t block lower ventilation intake

A hot compressor draws more amps — shortening battery life.
