Grounding & Earth Points in a Campervan
Understanding grounding is essential for a safe 12V system.
In a campervan, the chassis of the vehicle acts as the “earth” for the 12V electrical system.
But grounding isn’t always straightforward — especially when mixing 12V DC and 230V AC.
This guide explains exactly what to earth, where to do it, and how to keep your build safe.
1. What “Grounding” Means in a Van
In a 12V campervan, there is no true earth like in a house.
Instead, the van chassis = negative return path.
Meaning:
The battery negative is connected to the chassis
Every 12V device eventually returns to the chassis
The metal body becomes part of the circuit
This is normal and how all vehicles are wired from the factory.
2. Do You Have to Ground Everything to the Chassis?
No — and in many cases, you shouldn’t.
There are two approaches to grounding:
Approach 1: Chassis Grounding (Traditional Vehicle Method)
Each device uses the chassis as the return path.
Pros:
✔ Saves cable
✔ Works for simple setups
✔ Standard automotive practice
Cons:
✘ Can create unreliable grounds
✘ Rust, paint, and underseal cause poor contact
✘ Harder to diagnose issues
✘ Not ideal for sensitive electronics
Approach 2: “Star Grounding” (Campervan Best Practice)
Every device has its own dedicated negative wire back to a single main grounding point (busbar).
Pros:
✔ Stable voltage
✔ Easier fault-finding
✔ Reduces interference (important for fridges & heaters)
✔ No reliance on rusty chassis points
✔ Neater, fully controlled wiring
Cons:
✘ Uses more cable
✘ Slightly more work
Most van builders now use star grounding, with only ONE connection to the chassis.
3. The One Ground Point Your Van MUST Have
Your leisure system needs:
A single, solid connection from battery negative → chassis
This is your main earth point.
Ideal grounding bolts:
Factory grounding studs
Seat base bolts
Seat belt mounting bolts
Thick steel crossmembers
Engine bay grounding points
Avoid:
❌ Thin sheet metal
❌ Rusted panels
❌ Painted areas (remove paint before grounding)
Use:
Ring terminal
Star (shakeproof) washer
A2 stainless bolt
Torque it properly
4. How to Make a Proper Ground Point
Sand away paint back to bare metal
Clean with brake cleaner
Use a large ring terminal appropriate for cable size
Add a star (serrated) washer
Tighten firmly
Coat with dielectric grease or spray wax
Make sure only ONE main negative goes to chassis
This ensures a reliable, low-resistance connection.
5. Should You Ground 12V Appliances to the Body?
For safety and stability: no — run them back to your negative busbar.
Particularly important for:
Fridges
Diesel heaters
USB sockets
Fans
Pumps
Inverters
Solar controllers
DC-DC chargers
This prevents voltage fluctuations caused by bad chassis grounding.
Only one point should touch the chassis — the battery negative.
6. Grounding for Inverters (230V AC)
This is where many DIYers get confused.
Important:
230V AC grounding is a completely separate system.
Your inverter has:
DC negative → goes to your negative busbar
AC earth terminal → MUST go to the chassis (for safety)
Why?
Because the metal van body must be bonded to earth so that:
RCDs work
Faults trip correctly
The metal van body can’t become “live”
If using a consumer unit:
Connect inverter earth → earth bar
Earth bar → chassis
Never mix AC neutral with the van chassis.
7. Grounding a Diesel Heater
Diesel heaters are sensitive. Bad grounding causes:
Startup lockouts
“Low voltage” errors
Fan faults
Best practice:
Positive → fuse → heater
Negative → your negative busbar
NOT the chassis
Use 6mm² cable minimum
8. Grounding a Fridge
Manufacturers recommend:
Continuous negative back to battery/busbar
Minimum 6mm² cable
Avoid chassis grounding
This prevents “brown-out” restarts and compressor clicking.
9. Solar System Grounding
Solar panel negative → controller negative
Controller negative → busbar
Busbar → battery negative
Battery negative → chassis (ONE point only)
Do not ground solar panels to the chassis.
10. Common Grounding Mistakes
❌ Grounding every device separately to the van body
❌ Using rusty or thin metal ground points
❌ Forgetting to clean paint or powdercoat
❌ Adding multiple battery–chassis grounds (creates loops)
❌ Using small cable for main earth

11. Summary: The Correct Grounding Setup
Do this:
✔ One main negative–chassis bond
✔ All 12V appliances run back to a negative busbar
✔ Inverter AC earth → chassis

✔ Use thick cable for the main earth (16–25mm²)
