Wiring a Diesel Heater (12V Campervan Guide)

A diesel heater is one of the best upgrades you can add to a campervan — reliable heat, low electrical consumption, and incredibly efficient. But incorrect wiring is the #1 cause of heater failures. Poor voltage, bad grounds, or undersized cable will quickly lead to ignition problems or total failure.

This guide shows you how to wire a diesel heater safely and correctly, following best practice for 12V systems.


1. What Your Diesel Heater Needs Electrically

A diesel heater typically needs:

🔌 Stable 12V power

  • They are very sensitive to voltage drop.

  • During startup the glow plug can draw 8–12A, depending on the model.

  • After startup they only draw around 0.8–1.2A running.

🔋 A strong ground

  • Most heater faults come from poor earth points.

  • The heater must have a clean, solid, direct ground path.

⚡ Correct cable sizing

  • Minimum: 6 mm² (50 A rated)

  • Longer runs may require 10 mm²

2. Recommended Wiring Sizes

Cable Run (One-way length) Minimum Cable Size

2–5 m 6 mm² (often OK)
5–8 m 10 mm² recommended
8 m+ Strongly avoid long runs — relocate heater feed

👉 Diesel heaters always get over-engineered wiring. This prevents startup issues in cold weather.


3. Fuse Size & Placement

🔒 Fuse rating

Most heaters specify a 20 A fuse, but some Chinese models specify 15 A.

Safe default:
👉 20 A blade fuse

📍 Fuse location

Place the fuse:

  • Within 15–20 cm of the battery positive terminal

  • Before any cable enters the loom

  • In an accessible, splash-protected position


4. Correct Wiring Route

Positive (Red Cable)

Battery → 20 A Fuse → Heater positive input

Negative (Usually Black Cable)

Heater → Vehicle chassis or → Battery negative

Important:
The chassis ground must be:

  • Clean bare metal

  • Treated afterwards with paint/grease

  • A dedicated connection (not shared with multiple devices)




5. Best Practices for Reliable Diesel Heater Operation

✔ Avoid Scotch-locks, crimps from cheap kits, or twisting wires

Use:

  • Ratchet crimps

  • Heat-shrink terminals

  • Proper ring terminals for battery posts

✔ Don’t share the heater ground with fridges or inverters

Voltage noise from other devices can cause lockouts.

✔ Keep the cable run short

Heaters hate long, thin cable runs.

✔ Mount the fuse holder upright

This prevents condensation from collecting inside.
